Ways for Journalism Majors to Make a Difference

By Ashley Paskill on June 3, 2018

Journalism majors have a unique set of skills that help them contribute positively to society, and these skills can help make a difference. From young kids to those of all ages, journalists can help make a positive difference in the lives of others. Not only will you be giving back to your community, you will have some relevant volunteer work to add to your resume and portfolio.

1. Volunteer with Mighty Writers or a similar program

Mighty Writers specifically geared to helping K-12 students in need in the Philadelphia area improve their writing skills to make a difference in their lives. Several stories have come out of the program, including a student who recently got into an Ivy League school. Journalists are often good writers, so this is an excellent way to give back. Look for similar opportunities in your area.

2. Contribute to ServiceSpace

ServiceSpace is a website that has several outlets that are aimed to inspiring readers and video viewers to make a difference through a variety of videos and articles. News stories and uplifting videos come with calls to action related to the topics. These services are always looking for contributors to write video summaries, articles, and calls to action.

3. Answer questions on Career Village

Career Village is a website for underserved youth who are looking for advice in their academics and future careers. The students post specific questions that they have about their career paths and professionals can answer them. Recently, there has been a cry for help in answering journalism-related questions, so recent grads can help give their input to help these students.

4. Tutor local school kids in reading or writing

Take time out of your schedule to help tutor students who may be struggling with reading and writing. Offer to proofread assignments and give feedback for how the student can improve their skills. Talk to local schools and libraries to see if they are looking for tutors or know of any places that are in need. Check bulletin boards in your community as well as many opportunities are posted there.

5. Present about a local school about a journalism topic

This is a volunteer opportunity through the Society of Professional Journalists. The Society helps members partner with local schools to give presentations to school kids looking for advice in becoming a journalist. They give you everything you need to give the presentation successfully and are available for additional help if needed.
